Since 1961, Merrill has been celebrating academic excellence by providing our students with a safe, welcoming educational environment conducive to effective teaching and learning. Our theme truly embodies the tradition and spirit of what middle level education at Merrill is all about.
Merrill Philosophy Statement
Albert W. Merrill Middle School fosters an educational environment where all students are provided with diverse and challenging opportunities, empowering them to become life-long learners and active citizens in their democracy and in the global community.
To accomplish this, Merrill will:
- Provide a safe, welcoming environment that promotes intercultural understanding and respect
- Develop pride, respect, and good citizenship in our student body and staff
- Hold students to a common set of expectations
- Cultivate positive relationships with our students, families, and community members
- Ensure academic excellence by offering challenging, inquiry-based curricula and providing opportunities for interdisciplinary study
- Use authentic assessments to measure students' academic growth
- Guide students as they develop as IB learners
- Nurture the communication skills of our students
What makes Merrill great is a combination of excellent parents/guardians, dedicated teachers, instructional support staff, students, our educational business partner, Wells Fargo Bank, the administration, and the Merrill community of learners. At Merrill, we feel strongly that education is a team effort. "Together, we can make a difference!"
We strongly encourage parent/guardian involvement. Research indicates this promotes students to have:
- Higher grades, higher test scores, and improved learning
- Better school attendance
- Increased motivation and better self-esteem
- Lower rates of suspensions and fewer incidents of violence and/or acts of inappropriate of behavior
